Today is the first day for Administrative Professionals week with the primary observance day being Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday, April 27th. Hopefully you have had your ‘people’ put it on your calendar for you so that as a supervisor, boss, director, manager, lead, member of management, part of the upper echelon can bask in the glory you want to pour over their heads and in the gifts you will emerge from the inner office, corner power suite, board room, executive dining room to bestow.

One of the more difficult tasks of businesses, organizations and government agencies is to define titles and roles. One source, The Effective Admin™ made it simple by defining who isn’t on the list. EA divided it basically into three parts.

Group one is comprised of those you can just ignore. Don’t honor these, gift them or bother with shedding glory upon them. It will be a waste of resources and time. These include the outsiders like consultants, trainers and speakers who are independent. Recently unemployed AAs might think of themselves as worthy but don’t lend credence to the suit they are ready to file, students who are simply want-a-bes and you shouldn’t get their hopes up, retirees who have had their 15 minutes of office fame and have become the contemporary examples of how things used to be done around here. This group is important this year because of the austerity measures recently implemented to pull out of the recession. To overdo will trigger expectations that flamboyant excess is back and salary increases are ahead for those the company truly wants to honor.

Group two consists of anyone who can truthfully say to herself, the company or organization has given me a person at my disposal to direct, manage and motivate. I have been rescued from the category of dubious honors and pointed separation. I am a bestower of favors. With a little creative thinking, you know who you are. Should you get left out of the gift giving, honor bestowing, effusive appreciation this year just figure that someone has considered you worthy of this category.

Group three is a list of the worthy and here is where it gets complicated. When you go to www.admin-ezine.com and look for administrative job titles you will be struck by the varieties of titles listed from a survey they conducted in 2007 before the recession. 250 different titles are listed for the organizational support titles category. Though by far the greatest number are titled administrative assistants at 120 of those responding there seems to be a hierarchy of titles with some being called executive assistants and others senior administrative assistants. Some are still called administrative secretaries.

Some of the more colorful titles on the list are Admin Assistant level IV (no word on weather this person is at the top of the bottom of the pecking order), Secretary to the administrative assistant, Administrative secretary blue ribbon support, Assistant to the Chair (talk about low even the furniture is higher), Bingo Admin Assistant (lots of applicants for this one but doubt the pay is much), Digital Closeout Admin Assistant (they even have someone assigned to turn off the computers), ET support IV (the extra terrestrials have a backup), Freelance Executive Assistant (seems to be pretty independent), Relationship manager (apparently you don’t have to do it on your own), Sr Project associate for administration and member services (now this is the guy who buys all of the gifts).

With the London 2012 Olympics promising to be one of the most spectacular events ever, the organizers are planning to build a Olympic stadium which would be one of the most unique, modern and large stadiums in the world.  In fact, the Olympic stadium promises to be one of the major attractions of the London 2012 Olympics.  The stadium is proposed to be built at the Lower Lea Valley in Stratford.  The location chosen at Stratford is Marshgate Lane.

You would be amazed to note that the capacity of the Olympic Stadium would be a massive eighty thousand.  This would also make it the third largest and one of the most modern in Britain.  As already known, the Wembley stadium is the largest in Britain.  What is most unique about the Olympics Stadium design is that the huge capacity of eighty thousand can be greatly and easily reduced to twenty five thousand after the Olympic Games are over.  This is definitely an architectural marvel.

Although, the Olympic Stadium is made up of layers, many of them are temporary.  The method of constructing the Olympic Stadium has been formulated intelligently based on the principle of cut and fill.  Under this approach, the land is dug deep till it assumes the shape of a bowl, which would be easily able to accommodate twenty five thousand permanent seats.  In other words, this bowl structure forms the permanent part of the Olympic Stadium.  The architects have also planned to build a temporary structure above the permanent structure which would accommodate a good fifty five thousand individuals.

You should also note that the track and field part of the Olympic Stadium is being laid around the permanent structure.  This has been done mainly by excavating the soft clay from the earth.  The whole job is being done by using rakers made of concrete.  The ground over there has got a natural slope and the architects have taken full advantage of this aspect to incorporate this in to the Olympic Stadium design.  The changing rooms and warm-up areas are also being planned to be built in the basement region.  The upper temporary structure is made of lightweight steel and concrete which is demountable, in order to accommodate fifty five thousand spectators.  This work is going on at a brisk pace.

It has been decided that the temporary structure of the Olympic Stadium would be made using fabric which is lightweight.  The entire roof of the Olympic Stadium is going to be made out of fabric and would be based on the principles of engineering, governing a bicycle wheel.  The roof, although made from fabric would be strong enough to hold all the lights installed for the various sporting events and ceremonies.

The Olympic stadium is being built using state of the art technology since it is going to play host to millions of fans watching the sports events on their television, thousands of spectators who would be attending the games, the press from the world over, the various heads of states and some of the world’s greatest sportsmen.  The key feature of this wonderful modern stadium is that once the Olympic Games are over, this stadium can be used for local and domestic purpose.  This is one of the main objectives behind the unique spectacular design of the Olympic Stadium.

Online holiday sales from Thanksgiving to Christmas will grow by 42 percent over last year to $12.2 billion, predicts research from Forrester. And the average consumer plans to spend $671.89 this holiday season, up from 2002 when consumers spent an average of $648.85, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) 2003 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey released in October.

The Internet is great not only for finishing your holiday shopping, you can also conduct product research, comparison shop, look up government recalls, and find locations and hours of retail stores – should you care to venture outside.

Toys, Home & Garden and Consumer Electronics are hot categories this year. ToysRUs and KB Holdings led traffic gains since October, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. In the Home & Garden category, MarthaStewart.com and Sears saw significant growth, as did CircuitCity.com and RitzCamera.com in the Consumer Electronics category.

Visa delivers real-time discounts to mobile consumers when they shop

Visa is working with Gap to deliver real-time discounts and promotions to opt-in consumers via SMS. Interested customers sign-up for the service to be notified of money-saving deals in real-time while shopping. In other words, as a consumer you get to receive the mentioned special offers on your mobile device when qualifying transactions are made with an enrolled Visa account.

The new service is part of Visa’s larger strategy to “personalize the consumer shopping experience,” while at the same time delivering more value to merchants and financial institutions.

Gap started trialing the new Visa service in November 2010 to test the customer response. Customers enrolled via a secure website and were sent Gap offers when they made Visa transactions meeting certain pre-determined program criteria, such as shopping at a merchant within a specified zip code, a specific merchant category type, or spend on a specific day or during a specified time period. Special offers were redeemed by presenting the text message displayed on a mobile device at the Gap stores.

Obviously the pilot program with Gap was a success and now Visa plans to make the new service available to retailers nationwide. Love it!

DDA housing scheme 2010 result on Monday, April 18

The Development Authority is all set to announce the results for draw of Housing Scheme 2010 on Monday, April 18, 2011.

DDA has received over 7 lakh applications for the draw. It would be a computarised draw. This would be the biggest draw in the history of DDA.

The draw for lots for DDA Housing Scheme 2010, will be held at the office of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Noida.

The results will be uploaded on the official site of DDA and will be published in the newspaper by Thursday, April 19.

Happy to register first win in IPL-4: Sehwag

Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sewhag was a happy man after his team registered its maiden win in the fourth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), beating Pune Warriors India at the DY Patil Sports Complex in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. Sehwag played a crucial role in the win as he scored a valuable 37 and along with openers David Warner (46) set the tone for the chase with their 75-run stand. Venugopal Rao (31) and Aaron Finch (25) added crucial 47 runs for the sixth wicket as Daredevils chased down the winning target of 188 with four balls to spare. Pune Warriors captain Yuvraj Singh's all-round performance of unbeaten 66 runs and four for 29 went in vain but he was adjudged the man of the match.

Sehwag had words of praise for Rao and Finch and felt his India team mate was unlucky.

"It's a happy moment for us, finally we have a win. We knew this ground is smaller and you can hit sixes here. We thought the wicket would help the fast bowlers and so we played four fast bowlers. Finch and Venu were brilliant. Yuvraj bowled and batted really well, but unfortunately it didn't help his team," said Sehwag.

Yuvraj said that it was the day for the Daredevils.

"You have to give it to Delhi; they played really well under pressure. We didn't take wickets in the first six and didn't bowl well in the end. Rao batted really well in the end after Sehwag and Warner gave good start," he said.

DDA explains why draw of lots for flats in Noida

The Delhi Development Authority on Friday clarified its holding the draw of lots of " DDA Housing Scheme - 2010" in Noida because the CDAC office is located there and it has the expertise to handle an exercise of this magnitude.

In a press release, DDA claimed that the draw is being held in NOIDA "only due to the fact that the number of applicants of this particular scheme and also the number of flats being allotted under the scheme is high as compared to earlier schemes. CDAC has better wherewithal and expertise to conduct the draw of such a magnitude and as it is not possible to transport the requisite equipment from Noida to Vikas Sadan, the draw is being held at CDAC headquarters in Noida."

The authority claimed that there was no need for any applicant to have any apprehension since "the draw is totally computerized and is being held in a transparent manner in the presence of independent senior observers from diverse fields". It cited limited space in CDAC premises as a reason for not opening the draw to the public - there are 7.53 lakh applicants.

Draw of lots tomorrow for DDA housing scheme 2010

NEW DELHI: The wait to know whether you will be able to own a flat in Delhi ends in a couple of days as the DDA holds a draw of lots tomorrow for 16,000 flats offered under its latest housing scheme.

Some 7.53 lakh applicants are vying for the flats, located in areas like Vasant Kunj, Mukherjee Nagar , Motia Khan , Jasola , Dwarka, Rohini, Narela, Jaffarabad, Kondli and Gharoli. There are one, two and three bedroom flats with the prices ranging from Rs 9 lakh to Rs Rs 1.12 crore.

The results of the draw, the biggest ever in the history of DDA, will be uploaded on DDA website and published in newspapers by April 19. The allotment might be given by the end of the year.

The housing scheme was launched on November 25, 2010. Asked about the allegations of irregularities that had cropped up during the last draw of lots for its housing scheme, Delhi Development Authority officials said all necessary checks and balances are in place.

"The draw is being held in a transparent manner in the presence of independent senior observers from diverse fields," an official of the housing agency said.

For the first time, the draw will not be held in DDA headquarters but at the office of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Noida.

"The draw is being held in Noida only due to the fact that the number of applicants and the number of flats being allotted under the scheme is high as compared to earlier schemes. CDAC has better wherewithal and expertise to conduct the draw of such a magnitude and it is not possible to transport the equipments from there," the official said.

The DDA said that as there is limited space at the CDAC premises, it will be difficult to accommodate everyone wishing to witness the draw.

Chennai Super Kings to play Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL4 opener

Defending Champion Chennai Super Kings will play Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of IPL 2011.

CSK and KKR will play IPL season four opener at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk in Chennai on Friday.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk in Chennai will also host the final match of IPL 4 on May 28.

This year of T20 extravaganza will be played at 13 venues across the country and will last 51 days.
