World Cup 2011: India vs Bangladesh

With an aim to payback the last World Cup's humiliating defeat, India (Ind) takes on Bangladesh (BAN) in the opening match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to put India to bat.

Virender Shawag and Sachin Tendulkar started as opening batsmen.

India is batting at 129 at the loss on one wicket at the end of 20th over.

Sachin Tendulkar was run out at 28.

Gautam Gambhir had come in place of Sachin.

Gambhir was sent packing by the spinner Mehmadullah at 39.

Virat Kohli is the next batsman from India.

India is meanwhile, playing at 160 for two at the end of 24th over.

Dhoni-led Team India will try to start the World Cup campaign on winning note against Bangladesh.

However, cricket pundits think of it as a cakewalk for India but Dhoni & Co. must keep in mind that Bangladesh had defeated ‘Men in Blue’ by five wickets at the 2007 World Cup at Port of Spain.

Bangladesh have played Good home series before the World Cup. They thrashed New Zeraland and Zimbabwe in the ODI series. Bangladesh will have an advantage of playing under the home condition.

On the other hand, India is the 2nd ranked team in the ICC ODI rankings and team is performing better under pressure situation.

After winning both the Warm-up games, the morale of Team India is at its peak but it will have to keep the nerve in particular game.

Middle order was big trouble for India but in the final warm-up game against New Zealand, middle order shown sign of returning in form. Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and skipper MS Dhoni played good knock and scored freely.

Though there is a tough fight between Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina for the place in the playing XI.

Chances of Yuvraj singh are very bright as he is the only left-arm spinner in the side. But he is off colour with the bat. He scored just one run against Australia in the first warm-up game. Nevertheless, he was very effective with the ball in both games. In such circumstances, Raina will have to sit out and pave the way for Yuvraj Singh despite of scoring quickfire fifty in the final warm-up game.

If Yuvraj gets a berth in the final XI, he will have to play at No.6 or7 as Dhoni has indicated that he will play up in the order.

It will be interesting to see, India will play with two spinners and two seamers or not. The track is expected to be slower one and it will help spinners as game progresses. In this condition, Piyush Chawla is expected to support Harbhajan Singh in the spin department. It is obvious that India will play with four regular bowlers and rest of the overs will be completed by part-timers like Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan.

Most probably India’s playing XI will look like: Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh/Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Yusuf Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel/ Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla/ R Ashwin.

As far as Bangladesh is concerned, the made tremendous progress after the 2007 World Cup. They won three matches out of nine matches in the Caribbean World Cup. In the last four years Bangladesh has won 38 matches out of 88 and their winning percentage is 34.09.

Bangladesh is one of the youngest sides and it has average age of 25. In one word, a good encounter is expected when both the Asian countries will lock horn in a day/night encounter on February 19.

Pitch report:

Toss will once again play crucial role at Shere Bangla Stadium. It is expected that track will go slow in the second half. The team should bat first after winning the toss.

Statistics:

Overall, India and Bangladesh have played 23 ODIs. India managed to win 20 times while locals have tested the victory just twice, including famous victory in the 2007 World Cup while one match was abandoned. The winning percentage of India and Bangladesh are 90.9% and 9.09% respectively.

Players to watch:

India: Sehwag, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni and Zaheer
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Shakib-al-Hassan, Abdur Razzak.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: Psychological Determinants Of Performance

iSporter and Sports Psychologist Dr. Chaitanya Sridhar tries to explain the psychological requirements from a team to win the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

icccwc

As the World Cup (WC) fire catches on, speculation of India's chance is one of the most debated topics. What surprises me is the expectation placed on the team at every cricketing event no matter how the team has been performing. No wonder the Indian cricket fan is often called 'Schizophrenic' displaying a constant love-hate relationship with their demi-Gods!

The aim of this article is to highlight the major psychological determinants crucial for performance as 'Psychological Edge' is mantra in today's sporting world! Nevertheless, I'd like to ascertain that peak performance is a combination of physical and mental skills.

The idea for this article sprung mainly from the obsessive attention on Sachin and what might be his last WC. Guess, I might be hurting popular sentiment here but one needs to be honest while writing an article! With all respect to the great player and to all his fans, this attention is unwarranted. From a professional view point, this would be adding a lot more pressure on the master-batsmen! Personally, I feel it is unfair to be neglecting the rest of the team- especially since we are talking of Cricket which happens to be a team game.

indiacwcteam

teamsachin

So, what essentially are the main psychological determinants of performance? According to the Arousal Theory, performance is at its best when anxiety levels are in the middle or at the optimum level. The tremendous pressure we place on our team to win obviously shoots up the anxiety level of the team. Of course one can argue that the players are paid so well and they ought to manage anxiety at the elite level. Each player has his or her strategy to deal with pressure but we need to remember that it may not be possible at every juncture. The least we can do is not to add to the existing anxiety and pressure!

One glance at the newspaper or any website and we can see the dissection of the team, and numerous experts giving suggestions. Albeit, many may be helpful but the question to be asked is - whether it is the right time to be providing advice? Information over-load is not what a player seeks at this juncture.

In fact, it is very essential to learn to 'switch-on and switch-off' from the game which would be difficult for Indian players while playing in India as everyone talks, eats and breathes cricket. A player performs to his best when he is in his 'Zone' or 'Flowing' when he is in his Ideal Zone. What works for one player may not work for another- for example, Aggression may be good for players like Sreesanth and Harbhajan but may not suit a calmer player. It is possible to be in the Zone when there is less chatter of the conscious mind and hence it is more in sync with the sub-conscious mind. This is in turn means that mind needs to be rested while not playing ('switch-off').

Focusing attention on something entirely different such as 'Golf' or 'Beach Volleyball' would help cricketers. This 'switching off' is especially needed after a bad loss or game because we tend to remember things that have happened 'most recently'. This is one of the reasons why players get into a slump after one or two bad matches and why it is difficult to get out of one. The mind should constantly be fed with 'good memories or best performances' as what we think is what happens (Imagery)! Moreover, this could explain why many a times the team has 'bounced back' when they were written off. 'Give it the best' attitude can do wonders to the state of mind and the game.

indianfansThe other thing is the more we see images of the 'Cup' and India winning, public begin to expect it to happen. It's all great if India performs well but then when they don't, there is a discrepancy between what was expected (from fans) and the outcome. This explains the extreme irritation, disillusion and angst displayed on the team. This process of persuading or influencing indirectly is what is called subliminal persuasion. We have seen innumerable instances of different forms of targeting players when they have under performed. They range from verbal volleys, burning player effigies and even vandalization of player's houses. Even Sachin's effigy was not spared. I hope readers are following what I'm trying to get at!   In addition, too much emphasis on winning puts tremendous pressure on players as well.

Sports Research has revealed focusing on performance goals yield better results than focusing on outcome alone. E.g., run a ball approach than thinking of total score of 320. It goes without saying that 'managing nerves' is essential for focus - especially with all the noise in the sub-continent stadiums. All said and done, it's not the team with the best players that always wins but the team that can work together that wins. In this regard communication is vital especially between the Coach, Captain and teammates. Staying together is best assured when there is fun and players enjoy each others company. Senior players, who are more adept at dealing with stress and pressure, might be able to guide the younger ones to stay calm and perform to their potential.

teamindiachanges

When the Team is a united cohesive unit, players do not seek support networks outside (which is rarely available while traveling). The Coach, Senior or Teammate may be the best counselor- a reassuring word or a pat on the shoulder can do wonders. This interaction and support also helps in 'venting-out' through proper channels, as 'pent-up' frustration is sure to 'leak-out' at inappropriate junctures causing much distress to the player and probably the team.

So, the next time we see the team trying to socialize a little or letting lose a little after a bad game, let's not make a big deal of it- they need to go 'all out' in the next game. Performance of any form requires focus, belief to succeed a clear mind and also enjoy what they are doing!

May the best playing team win! Chak De India!

ICC Cricket World Cup: Confident Brett Lee defends pace-dominated Oz attack for World Cup

Australian pace spearhead Brett Lee emphases that their fast bowlers will be effective even on spin-friendly pitches of Indian Subcontinent during the cricket World Cup, beginning on Saturday in Bangladesh.

The defending champion team is stacked with fast bowlers with just only one frontline spinner in form of Jason Krejza, but Lee does not see a problem in adjusting to the alien conditions.

"I really don't see any problem with the pace attack that we have got, we are playing on these low and slow wickets, because at the end of the day its 150 km/h (kilometers per hour) through the air," said Lee after practice session in Ahmedabad.

The bowler said they were trying to create an environment, where each bowler backs each other in the team.

"Well pitches are massive part of the equation but if you are going to go like Shaun Tait bowling around 160 km/h (kilometers per hour) at the batsmen's toes it doesn't matter whether you are playing at Waca (Perth) or playing here in India," he said.

"It will still hit the batsman at his toes on full. What we are trying to do is to bowl in team environment. We have to back the other guys and with our spinners I think we have got very good attack," added Lee.

The Kangaroos are placed in Group A in the ICC World Cup with Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Canada and Kenya.

Australia begins its World Cup campaign against Zimbabwe at the Motera Stadium on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on February 21. They sweat it out at the Motera Stadium during their practice sessions.

Lee further said that he is confident that he can make the ball talk at the start and the end of the innings when Australia play their World Cup opener against Zimbabwe.

Lee also played down any concerns that the defending champions had lost their momentum after losing by 38 runs and seven wickets to India and South Africa.

"We have taken a lot out of these two practice matches which will put us in good stead for the first game on Monday," he said. (ANI)

The last time India met Bangladesh in the World Cup in 2007, India were bowled out for 191, and Bangladesh chased it down pretty easily.
It was regarded as one of the biggest upsets in the history of World Cups. As tournament hosts clashing in the opening match of the World Cup 2011, the question on everyone's lips is: Will India take their revenge in Bangladesh's own backyard?
Teams
Bangladesh: Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Shakib Al Hasan(c), Raqibul Hasan, Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul

World Cup Live: India off to a brisk start

Put in to bat first, India opener Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag started aggressively against Bangladesh as they begin their 2011 cricket World Cup campaign on Saturday.

Live Scorecard

Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and decided to field against co-hosts India in the tournament-opener.

Title aspirants India will have revenge on their minds after minnows Bangladesh had ensured their early exit in the first round of the 2007 edition at the Caribbeans.

Dhoni and his men will be eager to settle the score and kick start their campaign on a positive note at the Shere Bangla National stadium.

Tipped as one of the favourites, the current world number two side, boasts off an exceptionally balanced team.

The explosive batting line-up will be marshalled by Sachin Tendulkar, who would be participating in his sixth World Cup this time around and the senior batsmen will look to give India a flying start with Virender Sehwag.

Gautam Gambhir will be next, while the middle-order also looks rock solid with Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan -- all capable of playing big-shots and also rotating the strike.

In their second and last warm-up game, India scored a mammoth 360 against New Zealand and it will give a lot of confidence to the batsmen, especially skipper Dhoni and Gambhir, who hit an unbeaten 108 and 89 respectively.

In the bowling department, Dhoni have picked three pacers and a spinner as India is going with a four-pronged attack.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have so far been content with an odd upset and have been generally looked upon as underachievers but the tigers look to shrug off that tag when they lock horns with India at home.

Though they have just five victories from 20 World Cup matches to show, Bangladesh has the distinction of beating Pakistan on debut during the 1999 edition and ousting India and defeating South Africa four years ago.

Skippered by Shakib-Al-Hasan, Bangladesh have a few good batsmen in the pint-sized dynamic opener Tamim Iqbal and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Besides, captain Shakib-Al-Hasan, himself, ranks number one in the ICC's all-rounders list and knows how to wield the willow.

Bangladesh won their first warm-up match against Canada but lost to Pakistan in the second tie. However, their openers Tamim and Imrul Kayes have got runs under their belt in the two matches.

Though their pace attack will lack the fire-power of speedster Mashrafe Mortaza, 21-year-old pacer Rubel Hossain had claimed five wickets in the warm-up matches.

Besides, Bangladesh also have some good tweakers in left-arm slow bowlers Shakib and Abdur Razzaq, who can get handy support from many other part-timers.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (C), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam.

Umpires: Steve Davis (AUS) and Kumar Dharmasena (SRI)

TV umpire: Billy Doctrove (WIS)

Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI)

Pitch conditions: A hard wicket that is expected to help the slow bowlers in the later stages of the game. The team bowling second could find the ball difficult to grip if late evening dew arrives as predicted.

Cricket World Cup songs dilemma!

During past few months I had the chance to watch many number of so-called world cup songs, created by various artists starting from BnS & some other artists whom I saw for the first time :). Then through YouTube I watched Lahiru’s song which was labeled as the official song for the cricket world cup 2011.

Starting from BnS’s song - I can’t remember it really, because I only watched it once as It was full of sh*t. What the hell Bathiya was thinking when some girls with mini-skirts acting like the umpires on his video. For a guy with such high standards it was utter disappointment from viewer’s point of view. It was a video not suited for cricket at all. Don’t get me wrong that I condemn the mini-skirts on the video, but this is not what I expected from a guy who produced following songs, respectively for world cup 2007 & when the war against terror is over. Check them out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYboI-9pkZ0

I really don't like any of the songs made for this world cup than this song which was made for last world cup by BnS, but Bns were so pathetic this time :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OS2P_BFWyY

So my hopes for a good cricket anthem with BnS ended with that low class video :(. Before that I listened to Iraj’s song which he did with Jaya-Sri and I think it is relatively better than BnS’s. Lahiru's official song is relatively good but not good enough to be the official song :( No sense of patriotism in that song which is much needed for it to be an official song. But Lahiru is known for his typical Baila taste & I admire him because he at least lived up to his standards.

If you take a look at official video of Bangladesh:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh4o6R5vync

It has that sense of patriotism, but I’m quite sure that we can do a better, unique video than this.

For events such as superstar (in Sri Lanka) we see all artists get together and perform as one, but we are yet to see such a creation from our artists. As far as I think, all of them are trying to market themselves through the World Cup, no one is concerned about the quality of the work & no one seems to be getting together to perform as one. We saw the perfect example during last world cup by Windies, all artists got together to produce a colorful song.

Also we are yet to see a large media campaign associated with the world cup 2011, at least like campaigns we see when electing politicians ;) It’s like SLC is trying to save money by doing no more than hoisting some small advertising hoardings in some part of the country!

It is sorry to see we don't advertise our self as a nation to the world using this world cup! Few more weeks left & I hope we all at least can see a successful tournament in terms of winning!!!! Because when it comes to cricket administration, we all can agree that it is not functioning as it should be, only hope lies with our heartiest cricketers to give something to be happy for all cricket lovers!

P: S- I wrote this with no any hatred attitude towards our artists. I just wanted to mention that their creations could have been much better than this. If anyone likes the songs I mentioned I respect their taste, but for me they are not good enough, This is World Cup we are talking about :)

Has Mahendra Singh Dhoni breached ambush marketing clause?

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has attracted the eyeballs that he would rather not. His recent endorsement of an electronic product seems to have caused a flutter that he could have done well without.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has dashed off a letter pointing out that a recent commercial Dhoni had featured in could be in breach of its ambush marketing laws.

According to sources, the ICC has written to chief executives of all the national boards reminding them of the need for strict adherence to the ambush marketing clause after the publication of the Dhoni’s commercial in a leading national daily.

The exact content of the letter was not known but the Board of Control for Cricket in India is believed to have been told that the Dhoni commercial constituted breach.

BCCI secretary N Srinivasan could not be immediately reached for comment but a Board official said the Indian players would be cautioned to ensure that
such things do not recur. So far, no instruction seems to have gone to the Indian skipper.

Team manager Ranjib Biswal has denied receiving any instruction from the BCCI. “We’re not aware of any thing,” Biswal said. Team India reached Chennai on Monday evening. In the advertisement, Dhoni was seen
endorsing a product that is a competition to an official sponsor of the World Cup.

As per the ambush marketing rules, that is not permitted from seven days prior to the start of the championship.

But Dhoni’s managers claim that all things were kept in mind before the shoot was done. “We have paid attention to every minute detail in the ICC guidelines. The colour of Dhoni’s clothing was changed and a re-shoot was done to ensure that no clause was breached,” said a manager of India captain.

When contacted, an ICC spokesman declined comment on the issue. Dhoni had held a long meeting with the top brass of the BCCI recently on the issues of commercials and endorsements. The India skipper was on teleconference with the BCCI officials when four India players, including Sachin Tendulkar, called on them in Mumbai on February 4.

However, sources say the discussion at the meeting was more on the players’ endorsements of their Indian Premier League (IPL) teams rather than on the World Cup related issues. “The meeting was not about these ambush marketing clauses surely. The discussion was on something else,” said a Board source.
